Keynote Speaker
Dr. Cin-Ty A. Lee
We are delighted to have Dr. Cin-Ty A. Lee as our keynote speaker for GeoREX 2021. Professor Lee is a geologist at Rice University. He uses petrology, geochemistry and modeling to study how the Earth system operates from the mantle to the crust to the ocean/atmosphere/biosphere. He spends his spare time conducting biodiversity surveys in and around Houston, with a newfound interest in bioacoustics.
He donates beautiful bird paintings to fundraising efforts of non-profit organizations focused on conservation and education.
On the event day, he will be talking on "Whole Earth Carbon Cycling, from source to sink, and implications for long term climate".
Abstract:
Climate on million-year timescales is controlled by a dynamic balance between degassing of carbon dioxide from the Earth's interior and the efficiency by which atmospheric carbon dioxide is removed through burial of organic matter and carbonate deposition. Mountain building events play an important role in modulating inputs and the efficiency of outputs from the ocean-atmosphere system. Here, we discuss the importance of magmatic orogens like the modern Andes or the Cretaceous continental arc that stretched across the western margin of North America. These orogens amplify CO2 inputs when they are active, leading to greenhouse conditions. However, after magmatism ends, these mountains continue to serve as a source for silicate weathering, shifting the Earth system to cooler conditions. The rise and fall of mountains should thus lead to greenhouse-icehouse oscillations. Finally, we discuss the implications of Cretaceous magmatic orogens on the generation of organic-rich source rocks, which have had both positive and negative impacts to society.
