Academic Advisors for Study Abroad
Before applying to study abroad
Before applying, you must ask your academic advisor about:
How study abroad would fit into your degree. When you can go abroad in your degree, and if you want to go on multiple programs, making a plan for that with your advisor. What type and level of courses should you take abroad in order to meet your degree requirements.Once accepted to a program
You should then ask your academic advisor more specific course questions regarding transfer credit, like:
How might the courses you plan to take at your host university transfer back to UCalgary?Once you return
It's recommended (but not required) to follow up with your academic advisor again following your return, to finalize credit transfer questions.
Tip: this also helps to speed up the transfer credit process!
Each program web page on our site (which can be found using the program finder) should include details about credit transfer, expected course load, and other general academic information like where to find courses. All pages should include:
- how many credits on your program or at your host university are equal to a 3 unit (half course) at UCalgary
- what the expected credits/courseload is for your host university or program
- how to find courses offered at your host university or program. If you have questions about this, please contact the study abroad advisor listed at the bottom of the program web page.
If you are concerned about your GPA and eligibility, we want to support you! Please contact the study abroad advisor listed at the bottom of the program web page to talk about your concerns. We also strongly recommend using the free resources provided by the Student Success Centre on campus, located on the 3rd floor of TFDL. Speak with Academic Development Specialists, attend in-person or online seminars, or book 1-on-1 advising.
You can meet with an academic advisor at the Arts Students' Centre to discuss your study abroad plans.
They offer advising appointments, which can be booked on Elevate (formerly Career Link). They also have drop-in, a virtual front desk, and phone/email options - please see the Arts Student Centre website for details.
NOTE for Non-Arts Majors (i.e. students in another faculty who are taking arts courses while abroad): You should be reviewing your academic plan, including arts or option courses, early into the application process with your primary faculty's academic advisors for exchange. See relevant drop-down section below to find your faculty's advisor.
A formal Letter of Permission is not required for Arts exchange students, but you must discuss course approvals with one of the Arts academic advisors, and submit a Course Evaluation Request Form once you know which courses you will be taking abroad. The Arts advisors may also refer you to Department Advisors for specific course approvals, which may require course outlines.
Please contact Sarah Hawley (née Hogan), Undergraduate Advisor, Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (TRW 3rd floor, 3D25)
For Letters of Permission, please contact the advisor above. Course outlines are required for the evaluation, so you must provide them to the advisor as soon as you are able.

For academic advising:
All Haskayne majors and minors must contact an advisor to check that your desired courses (both business and non-business courses) will transfer back appropriately for your degree.
- BComm students: your advisor will be either Stacey McGregor (for exchanges to Europe, Ireland, and the UK) or Erin Mizzoni (for exchanges to Asia, Australia, North America, or Semester at Sea) - contact undergrad.exchange@haskayne.ucalgary.ca
- MBA students: your advisor is Thomas Kitcher -contact mba.exchange@haskayne.ucalgary.ca
Please click here for the Haskayne advising office location and current drop-in hours.
For Letters of Permission:
BComm students are no longer required to submit a formal Letter of Permission. However, you must speak with an academic advisor and confirm transfer credit for your desired courses.
- Check for your course(s) on the Haskayne Exchange Course Guides. If your courses are listed on the Course Guides, the transfer credit is considered "pre-confirmed" and no further action is required.
- If your courses are not listed on the Course Guides, you need to provide course outlines for assessment. Download the Course Assessment Request Form and email it, along with your course outlines, to undergrad.exchange@haskayne.ucalgary.ca.
Note: Students who are taking courses for a combined degree/minor/certificate offered by the Faculty of Arts can fill out the course evaluation webform online (instead of using the Haskayne course assessment request form). Combined programs with all other faculties must submit the request form & outlines via email to the Haskayne advisors. Combined programs with Schulich will additionally require a Letter of Permission, as per Schulich's guidelines.
It is recommended to complete these steps for course assessment 2 months before your planned arrival in your host country, as it can take 6+ weeks for the assessment to be done.
