forensic science education

"The increased media spotlight of the forensic science community in the 90's has also increased the number of students interested in the profession. Many forensic science programs are revisiting how undergraduate and graduate education should be undertaken. The applied and interdisciplinary nature of forensic science has resulted in forensic programs administered from various departments although the areas of drug analysis and trace analysis generally are focused on in chemistry departments, whereas serology/DNA and toxicology are focused on in biology departments" (Almirall & Furton, 1995).

first clinical forensic medicine program

In July, 1991 the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville and the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office initiated the first clinical forensic medicine program in the United States. This program incorporated clinical forensic training into the emergency medicine residency training program and established a one-year fellowship in clinical forensic medicine (Smock, Nichols & Fuller, 1993, p. 835).

The Clinical Forensic Medicine program is designed to address the unmet forensic needs of patients who are survivors of violent injury and trauma and those patients who have not yet succumbed to mortal injuries. Trauma victims present regularly to emergency departments in need of acute care (Smock, Nichols & Fuller, 1993, p. 835).
