Advising Services
Academic advising is available to Indigenous students through Writing Symbols Lodge and the Student Success Centre.
Writing Symbols Lodge provides advising and assistance for the following:
- General program advising
- Course registration
- Navigation in D2L, Academic Requirements (AR) and MyUCalgary
- Academic processes and calendar information
- Financial needs
- Orientation events
Students, particularly those in the upper years of their degree programs, which require faculty-specific academic advising, should seek assistance from their respective faculty-based advising office.
- Arts advising is offered in MSC 397 from 2 – 4 p.m. on Tuesdays

WSL Writing support
This service is designed to help Indigenous students who want to develop their academic writing skills.
Writing support sessions are hosted at the Writing Symbols Lodge (MSC 390Z) and open to undergraduate and graduate students. These in-person sessions offer one-on-one opportunities to work directly with a writing tutor.
Writing Support can range from helping students focus on grammar to learning the fundamentals of essay writing. Here are a few of the areas you can get support in:
- learning how to structure essays
- write a thesis statement
- make effective connections and transitions between, ideas, sentences, and paragraphs
- properly referencing sources, including help with citations and bibliographies
- developing strong essay structure, including help with organization and shaping arguments
The writing advisor works with students to identify research topics/questions, potential sources to explore, and the appropriate style of writing required by the assignment (i.e., reflective, narrative, argumentative).
Other areas for support: Master's theses, PhD dissertations, articles being prepared for publication, research proposals, reflective papers, stories, poems, grant/scholarship applications, personal statements, infographic posters, presentations, tables, charts, cover letters, and academic CVs.
Register to attend WSL Writing Support Sessions on Elevate in advance, or drop in on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at WSL (MSC390Z).
