Harassment and Violence Awareness Training course

The University of Calgary is committed to creating a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for working and learning. To honour these commitments and in compliance with Alberta legislation, the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) team has developed a mandatory Harassment and Violence Awareness Training course.  

As required by the OHS Act, all current and future faculty and staff members are required to complete the training. It will take approximately 35 minutes to complete.

Faculty and staff will receive an email notification of enrolment, including a link to the course. You will have two weeks to complete the course.

Managers will receive automated emails when their employees are enrolled in the course. Leaders: please work with your employees to schedule a time to complete the course within the allotted 14 days.

Harassment

Harassment and violence are considered hazards under the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulation and Part 27 of the OHS Code with requirements to ensure workers are not subjected to or participate in harassment and violence at the work site. 

Employees, supervisors, and managers must be familiar with the OHS Act, Regulation, and Code and University of Calgary policies and procedures related to harassment and violence. Harassment and violence must be reported. Refer to the appropriate policy for reporting procedures. 

OHS Act Definition:

"Harassment" means any single incident or repeated incidents of objectionable or unwelcome conduct, comment, bullying or action by a person that the person knows or ought reasonably to know will or would cause offence or humiliation to a worker, or adversely affects the worker's health and safety, and includes 

(i) conduct, comment, bullying or action because of race, religious beliefs, colour, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, family status, gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation, and 
(ii) a sexual solicitation or advance, 

but excludes any reasonable conduct of an employer or supervisor in respect of the management of workers or a work site.

Harassment must be reported as defined within the Policy and Procedure. 


Sexual Violence

Sexual violence must be reported as defined within the policy.


Workplace Violence

OHS Act Definition:

violence”, whether at a work site or work-related, means the threatened, attempted or actual conduct of a person that causes or is likely to cause physical or psychological injury or harm, and includes domestic or sexual violence.
