Traffic and Pedestrian Safety

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety on Campus

Looking out for each other

Whether you're driving, cycling, riding a scooter, skating or walking, everyone plays a part in safety. Here are some general safety tips when sharing the road

Follow all traffic rules and road signs

All local traffic laws and bylaws apply to the University of Calgary.

Traffic Safety Act (Government of Alberta)
Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation (Government of Alberta)
Traffic Bylaw (City of Calgary)

Be attentive to your environment

  • Keep your eyes on the road, not on your phone.
  • Turn down the volume to hear your environment.

Make eye contact

Where possible, make eye contact with pedestrians/drivers before crossing.

Slow down on shared pathways

The shared pathways at UCalgary are in a slow speed zone. Reduce your speed to maximum 15 km/h and always yield to pedestrians.

Walking

  • Only cross in designated crosswalks.
  • Dress to be seen.
  • Be especially cautious and aware during poor weather conditions (reduced visibility and/or slippery roads).
  • Do not assume other drivers see you or will stop when they should. Walk defensively.

Cycling or rolling

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Give right of way to pedestrians and slow down in crowded areas.
  • Follow campus speed limits for scooters (15 km/h)
  • Scooters Do's and Don'ts

Driving

  • Reduce your speed and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections.
  • Bicyclists and pedestrians can be unpredictable; expect the unexpected.
  • Leave plenty of space when passing.
  • Keep a safe following distance.

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Task Force

Environment, Health and Safety at UCalgary has created a Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Task Force, made up of members from different units across campus, including Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), Facilities, Campus Security, Parking Services, and Supply Chain Management. Our main goal is to make sure everyone on campus stays safe by identifying and addressing hazards related to traffic and pedestrians.

We work together to come up with strategies and plans, both short-term and long-term, to reduce the risk of accidents between vehicles and pedestrians and create a safer environment for all.
