The Bachelor of Design in City Innovation is a four-year degree that enables students to develop design and design thinking skills to address the complex issues that affect our cities and the broader built environment. Graduates can undertake further studies in a variety of professional programs including architecture, planning, landscape architecture, law, social work, public policy, public health, and data science as well as pursue careers in multiple disciplines in the private, public, and non-profit sectors that focus on creating positive change in the physical and social infrastructure of cities.

The courses required for the Architecture Concentration are equivalent to the courses in the Master of Architecture (MArch) Foundation Year and constitute the prerequisites for the University of Calgary’s two-year MArch degree. Completion of this Concentration does not guarantee admission to the MArch or to other degree programs in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

The courses required for the Landscape Architecture Concentration are equivalent to the courses in the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Foundation Year and constitute the prerequisites for the University of Calgary’s two-year MLA degree. Completion of this Concentration does not guarantee admission to the MLA or to other degree programs in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

Students interested in pursuing the MArch or MLA can refer to the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape for additional admission information.

The courses required for the Minor are equivalent to the courses in the Master of Architecture (MArch) Foundation Year, and constitute the prerequisites for the University of Calgary’s two-year MArch degree. Completion of this Minor does not guarantee admission to the MArch or to other degree programs in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, but it may reduce the number of courses that are required for an MArch. Students completing the Minor must apply for admission to the MArch degree.

Students interested in pursuing an MArch at the University of Calgary should note that only those students who have completed a four-year degree are considered for admission.

The University of Calgary offers an interdisciplinary embedded Certificate in Sustainability Studies which can be taken in conjunction with most undergraduate degree programs¹. Any undergraduate student, in good academic standing, is eligible for admission to the certificate in Sustainability Studies. Undergraduate students must successfully complete their degree, and all other requirements for graduation, to receive their embedded certificate in Sustainability Studies.

¹Certain programs may not be eligible to take the certificate, and some may require additional time and courses to complete. Programs not eligible for the certificate include Law, Nursing, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Social Work, and Veterinary Medicine.
