Medical Precision Health 600       Foundations of Precision Health
A key element of Precision Health is the ability to critically appraise myriad types of data in order to facilitate better clinical decisions, health system improvements and clinical education delivery. Review of the essential statistical underpinnings of data analyses in health and related research and understanding ways in which those analyses can be leveraged to improve decision making in health and education systems.

Builds upon the Foundations of Precision Health, and includes in-depth study of legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts in precision health.

Medical Precision Health 603       Health System Leadership
A critical examination of leadership development in the era of precision health as it relates to individual leadership practices, multi-disciplinary teams and the broader healthcare system. Exploration of new frameworks to facilitate collaborative decision making and effecting change and using critical appraisal to identify the most relevant research and make evidence-based decisions to problem-solve around real issues in health systems.

Medical Precision Health 610       Omics Applications for Clinical Practice
An overview of ‘omics’ technologies, such as genome and exome sequencing. Examination of key technological platforms in the omics field, how to apply them in the clinical setting and understanding ways in which their analyses can be utilized to guide clinical decision-making will be covered.

Medical Precision Health 611       Pharmacogenomics
Pharmacogenomics, a leading application of precision medicine, has played a key role in improved targeting of pharmaceuticals to patients’ needs (providing the “right drug, to the right patient, at the right time, in the right dose”). Topics covered will include pharmacogenomic nomenclature, the concept of “pheno-conversion” and its impact in the clinic, and a focus on key examples of both pharmacogenetic testing platforms as well as case studies for prescription decision-making.

Medical Precision Health 612        Precision Oncology
Focus on the major strategies for leveraging the tools of precision medicine in the field of oncology by examining how different types of DNA variants can be assessed, the ways in which computational analyses can be brought to bear, and will include discussion of targeted therapeutics, including immunotherapies, for treating individual cancer patients.

Medical Precision Health 613        AI Applications in Precision Health
Concepts and ideas in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning -- including statistical approaches, visualization, and human-computer interactions. Applications of AI techniques and software tools. This will primarily involve exploring recent examples of AI and Machine Learning tools being specifically used to aid in clinical practice.

Medical Precision Health 619       Advanced Precision Medicine
An advanced seminar course covering recently published examples of precision medicine. Students will critically evaluate the subjects of discussion, creatively explore ways in which precision medicine studies and tools could be developed, and will focus on ways in which they can lead health system transformation such that the benefits of precision medicine are more widely realized for their patients.

Quality management principles and science will be introduced starting with quality management frameworks and theory that will guide and rationalize students’ learning. Quality management tools for data analysis, prioritization, improvement and change management will be introduced and described which will help students succeed in quality improvement projects.

An introduction to safety science and the key concepts for managing patients’ safety in the healthcare system. Topics will include the exploration of proactive and reactive safety management, recognizing the similarities and differences with quality management and learning concepts of managing a serious patient harm event with a focus on system analysis.

Medical Precision Health 672       Data Interpretation and Presentation
Students will work with quantitative and qualitative data to derive meaning so they can present rationale options for making decisions. Students will develop data definitions, analyze data sets, and learn how to work with a data analyst that will provide them with insight for understanding important information about data and inform decisions about important issues. Data visualization skills will enhance a student’s ability to interpret and to positively communicate information about data to key stakeholders.

Students will learn about human cognition and applying those theories to understanding how humans interact with their environment, equipment, and each other to make decisions and complete tasks. With this understanding of human skills and limitations, students will be prepared to design better systems in which healthcare providers work to reduce the likelihood of errors and poor outcomes for patients.

Builds on objectives and deliverables articulated in Medical Precision Health 682, and informs the deliverables for Medical Precision Health 684.
