Introduction to Indigenous Studies

A multi-disciplinary, theoretical and empirical overview of the situations, perspectives, and aspirations of selected Indigenous peoples with a focus on the Canadian context.

Indigenous Studies 303

Indigenous Ways of Knowing

An introduction to various Indigenous peoples’ ways of knowing (epistemology) with a special emphasis on the contextualization of knowledge-building. Deals with various aspects of building knowledge, such as listening, reflection, protocol, and experience; emphasis will normally be on local traditional knowledge.
Course Hours: 3 units; (3-0)
Antirequisite(s): Credit for Indigenous Studies 303 and either Social Work 553.30 or Social Work 553.33 will not be allowed.
Notes: Normally offered during Block Week. Field trip(s) and pre-term study are normally required. A supplementary fee may be assessed to cover additional costs associated with this course.

Indigenous Studies 343

Indigenous Law in Canada

Examination of the special legal and constitutional principles, provisions and instruments that have an impact on Indigenous individuals, governments and organizations. Topics covered may include Indigenous legal traditions, Aboriginal law, fiduciary duties, the Royal Proclamation of 1763, the Indian Act, the 1982 Constitution, and pivotal court decisions.

An examination of current research trends with, by, and for Indigenous peoples through the lens of Indigenous history, representation, activism, and self-determination.

Examines principles underlying Indigenous ethics and academic and local research protocols. Covers applying Indigenous ways of knowing in a research context, Indigenous methodologies, and implementing relational research frames when collaborating with Indigenous peoples.

An advanced seminar centering the multiplicity of Indigenous Gender/LGBTAIQ2S voices. Relationships framed as traditional, contemporary, and historical are discussed in the context of matriarchy, two-spirit, feminism, masculinity, health, and gender balance.
