Faculty of Social Work
Program Changes

Summary of Degree Programs

  • Removed the reference to the three campuses in the section about the Bachelor of Social Work program.
  • Kept the Community-Based Learning Circles (CBLC) locations because we will have continuing students in those programs in 2022-2023
  • Added Edmonton as a possible in-person residency location for students admitted to the Virtual Learning Circle program.

Faculty Information

  • Updated the website address and Student Services contact information.
  • Replaced the Additional Information section with information about the three campus locations.
  • In the Professional Conduct section updated the hyperlinks to the Canadian Association for Social Workers Code of Ethics and the Alberta College of Social Work Standards of Practice.

Faculty Regulations

  • In 3.1 Admissions added a link to A.5.3 Transferring from Another Post-Secondary Institution and A.5.3.2
  • Supplementary Admission Requirements sections of the Calendar. Only faculty specific admission information (e.g., reference to supporting documents and supplementary document deadline) is retained in this section. Stated that Social Work 201, a course required for admission to the BSW program, is exempt from Credit Granted (CG).
  • A paragraph has been added to clarify the application process for those who voluntarily withdraw from the BSW program but wish to complete the program a few years later.
  • The paragraph indicating that those with a complete non-Social Work four-year degree and relevant workand/or volunteer experience in the human services field could apply to the MSW program was moved to the Second-Degree Students section.
  • Consistent with proposed changes to section D. Change of Faculty or Program in the main Calendar, asection was included to address faculty specific Change of Program regulations and to clearly indicate that change of program requests from current University of Calgary students are not accepted for the BSW program.

Registration

  • Clarified the normal course load for the Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge BSW and for the Community-Based Learning Circles (CBLC) and Virtual Learning Circle (VLC) programs.
  • Added a statement to indicate that those wishing to complete more than the normal load must seek approval from the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs and permission will not be granted for the admission term.
  • Created a subsection with a title Transfer Credit from Other Institutions. In this section included the maximum units of Social Work courses allowed for transfer credit and outlined the faculty's guidelines for registering for courses at other post-secondary institutions on a Letter of Permission (LOP). Many Post-Diploma students rely on the LOP process to complete the non-social work courses required for the BSW degree. Included a link to B.12 Letters of Permission section of the Calendar
  • Updated the Interruption of Program Leading to a Degree section to align with the University's policy regarding stop-outs, students who do not register in any University of Calgary courses for a 12-month period or more

Course Work

  • A statement was included to indicate that Social Work 411 and Social Work 413 are exempt from CG. A Credit (CR) designation is given upon successful completion of their co-requisite courses (Social Work 410 and Social Work 412 respectively) and a graded evaluation of the seminar supports a more comprehensive evaluation of student performance and learning in professional practice settings.
  • Included a clarifying statement regarding practicum during Term Breaks. Outlined options and potential implications for students.

Student Standing

  • Included the definitions for the different academic standings and clarified the requirements related to progression in program, dismissal, and re-admission.
  • Clarified the Graduation Requirements by including additional information.
  • Added the faculty's CG grade policy; identified courses exempt from CG.

Appeals Process

  • Information about the Appeals Process was added with links to sections I. Reappraisal of Graded Term Work and Academic Assessment (final grades) and J. Student Appeals to the University Appeals Committee and University Appeals Tribunal.

Learning Circles University Transfer Route (including After-Degree)
