Summary of Changes for 2020/21 Calendar
University of Calgary Calendar 2020-2021 Academic Regulations G. Examinations and Tests G.5 Scheduling of Final Examinations
G.5 Scheduling of Final Examinations

All final examinations must be scheduled by the Registrar, except:

  • Final examinations which are take-home, oral or project presentations.
  • Final examinations in the JD, MD, DVM and graduate programs offered by the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.
  • Courses held at an off-campus location where the final examination will be scheduled at that location. In these cases, the department will schedule the final examination during the official final examination period for that term, as outlined in the Academic Schedule. This excludes non-MD courses at the Foothills campus and courses in the MBA program.
  • Supplemental examinations.

Final examinations for evening and week-end courses are scheduled by the Registrar. The scheduling of final examinations in the evening or on a week-end cannot be guaranteed.

Scheduling of final examinations focuses on limiting scheduling conflicts for students. Requests for final examinations to be scheduled on specific dates cannot be accommodated.

The Final Examination Schedule will be published approximately one month after the start of the term and will be available in the Student Centre at my.ucalgary.ca/ and on the Office of the Registrar website: ucalgary.ca/registrar/exams.

Final Examinations in Online and Blended Courses

In addition to the above regulations, the following regulations apply to timed final examinations for online and blended courses.

  • Timed final exams must be designed to be completed within time scheduled for the final examination stated in the final examination schedule provided by the registrar (e.g. a two-hour final exam is designed to take two hours to complete).
  • Timed final exams must be set up in D2L or other approved university platforms to allow for an additional 50 per cent time extension to complete the exam (e.g. a two-hour exam would have a three-hour time window to complete). Accommodation requirements through Student Accessibility Services still apply. The time allocated for issues that arise during an assessment would be in addition to accommodation requirements. See Section G (Examination and Tests) for additional details.
  • Students must have the option to start their exam at a time that best suits their situation within the 24-hour time period, except in those cases where prior approval has been obtained from the Dean of the faculty offering the course to host a synchronous final assessment where students start and end at the same time. Courses with special approvals for common assessments that start and end at the same time must also provide alternative arrangements for students who are not able to complete the assessment during the common time (e.g. different time zone, caregiving responsibilities, ability to secure an appropriate test-taking environment). The process for completing an online final assessment at an alternate time must be articulated in the course outline.
  • All final exams must be submitted by the end time indicated in the registrar final exam schedule.
  • Technology requirements needed for the final examination must be indicated in the course outline.

If a final exam is planned, it must be scheduled during the final exam period in accordance with the exam regulations in section G.5.

  • Fully in-person course: final examinations will be scheduled in-person.
  • Blended and online courses: final examinations will be scheduled online.
