The University of Calgary offers an interdisciplinary Embedded Certificate in Sustainability Studies. This certificate can be taken in conjunction with most undergraduate degree programs at the University of Calgary. Certain programs may not be eligible to take the certificate and some may require additional time and courses in order to complete. Programs not eligible for the certificate include Law, Nursing, Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Social Work, and Veterinary Medicine.

Students may declare their interest in the certificate via MyUofC using their online Student Centre. Any undergraduate student, in good academic standing, is eligible for admission to the certificate in Sustainability Studies excluding those from specialized faculties mentioned above. Students are encouraged to discuss their interest in the certificate with the Academic Co-ordinator of Sustainability Studies in the faculty of Environmental Design prior to starting the certificate. Students’ overall academic progression in their degree program, including academic probation, will be subject to the rules and regulations of their home academic unit, as set out in the Calendar.

Undergraduate students must successfully complete a minimum of 18 units (3.0 full-course equivalents) from the Field of Sustainability Studies while fulfilling the following requirements:

a) Core courses: 12 units (2.0 full-course equivalents) from Sustainability Studies 201, 401, 403, and 501.

b) Sustainability electives: An additional 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) from the Field of Sustainability Studies, of which a minimum of 3 units (0.5 full-course equivalents) must be at the 300 level or above. The Academic Co-ordinator of Sustainability Studies must approve elective courses.

Undergraduate students must successfully complete their degree, and all other requirements for graduation, in order to receive their embedded certificate in Sustainability Studies. The embedded certificate in Sustainability Studies will be an institutional credential. Students will graduate according to their individual degree program, and the completion of the certificate will be noted on the parchment, provided that the student has completed the program requirements listed above.

Sustainability Studies consists of all courses labelled Sustainability Studies (SUST), and those courses flagged as sustainability-focused or sustainability-related as part of the University Calendar. A full, up-to-date list is maintained on the website of the Office of Sustainability (http://www.ucalgary.ca/sustainability/courses), as course offerings may change regularly or may not be offered every year or term.

Many of the courses listed above have prerequisites that lie outside the Field of Sustainability Studies, may have prerequisites and are typically in high demand. Registration in these courses is not assured. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that prerequisites are completed. We encourage students to speak with the Academic Co-ordinator of Sustainability Studies on a regular basis to assist with certificate planning.
