The Bachelor of Arts in General Humanities is a four-year multidisciplinary degree. Students interested in a broad multidisciplinary program should also consider the BA (Communication and Culture) Program discussed above.
The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity of a broad education in the Humanities. It may usefully be supplemented, by way of career preparation, with courses preparatory to application for admission to a professional Faculty (e.g., Medicine), or with an appropriate Minor (e.g., the Minor in Management and Society, or Law and Society). Advice on these and related matters may be obtained from the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs and Student Affairs).
Students intending to register in the BA program in General Humanities should consult with the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs and Student Affairs), Faculty of Arts, to review their proposed programs of study.
A. Faculty of Arts Requirements
1. Overall Program: Successful completion of an approved program consisting of 120 units (20.0 full-course equivalents).
2. Program Focus: Successful completion of the Major Field Requirements and Other Requirements listed below.
3. Academic Achievement:
(a) A minimum GPA of 2.00 must be achieved over all courses.
(b) A maximum of 18 units (3.0 full-course equivalent) "D" or "D+" grades overall.
4. University of Calgary Study:
(a) A maximum of 60 units (10.0 full-course equivalents) in eligible post-secondary transfer credits from other institutions may be counted toward the degree.
(b) A maximum of 24 units (4.0 full-course equivalents) in eligible post-secondary transfer credits from other institutions may be counted toward the Major Field.
5. Depth: A maximum of 48 units (8.0 full-course equivalents) at the junior or 200 level.
6. Breadth: A minimum of 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) from the Faculty of Science.
7. Physical Activity Courses: A maximum of 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) may be taken from: Dance Education Activity/Theory, Outdoor Pursuits Activity/Theory and Physical Education Activity/Theory.
B. Major-Field Requirements
1. Core: Humanities 305 and 307 or Communication and Culture 301 and 303, which should normally be completed by the end of the third year of study.
2. Breadth: At least 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) must be taken from each of the following areas of study: (a) English; (b) Philosophy; (c) a modern language or literature other than English; (d) Greek and Roman Studies; (e) History; (f) Religious Studies; (g) Comparative Literature. An expanded list of courses in the Comparative Literature area is available from the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs and Student Affairs).
3. Areas of Focus: An additional 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) must be chosen from each of two of the seven subject areas specified in requirement 2.
4. Depth: At least 30 units (5.0 full-course equivalents) of the courses counting toward Requirements 1-3 must be at the 300 level or above.
C. Other Requirements
Language Requirement: A working knowledge is required of a language other than English. This requirement may be met by course work in an ancient or a modern language appropriate to the student's program or by examination. Language competence is required at a level equivalent to the completion of 6 units (1.0 full-course equivalent) at the 300 level or above in the language in question.
