Open Studies, Visiting and Exchange students who wish to enrol in degree programs at the University must submit a complete Application for Admission by the prescribed deadline, submit official transcripts and meet all admission requirements as set forth by the University.

Undergraduate rules and regulations of the University apply to all Open Studies students.

Open Studies students must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency requirement.

An Open Studies student is permitted to register in credit courses, but who is not admitted to a program leading to a degree or diploma. Open Studies students must complete an Open Studies Application to be considered. Applicants must submit transcripts from all high schools and post-secondary institutions attended.

To be eligible for registration under this category, students without a post-secondary degree must be either 18 years of age or older by the commencement of the term to which they are seeking admission or holders of a high school diploma or equivalent. Holders of an approved degree from an accredited institution require a minimum of three years of recognized university-level course work and a 2.00 grade point average.

The following students are not permitted to register under the Open Studies category:

(a) Students who are currently under suspension as they were required to withdraw from a faculty at the University of Calgary or from another post-secondary institution within the last twelve months;

(b) Continuing students whose registration has been denied due to enrolment restrictions.

(a) Open Studies students are eligible to register in a maximum of three courses (nine units) per term to a maximum of ten courses (thirty units), including withdrawals.

(b) Open Studies students are permitted only one "D" or "D+" grade; students who obtain an "F" grade or a second "D" or "D+" grade will be refused further registration as an Open Studies student (withdrawal may be considered as failing to achieve the required standard). Academic Review for discontinuation takes place at the end of the Winter Term and the end of the Summer Term.

(c) Open Studies students are permitted to register in courses via MyUofC using their online Student Centre. Enrolment appointments are assigned and reflected on the Student Centre.

(d) Open Studies students are not permitted to register in 700-level or above courses.

(a) Open Studies degree holders are eligible to register in a maximum of five courses (fifteen units) per term to a maximum of ten courses (thirty units), including withdrawals.

(b) Students may register for courses via MyUofC using their online Student Centre. Enrolment appointments are assigned and reflected on the Student Centre.

(c) Open Studies degree holders will be subject to dismissal if their academic performance is less than satisfactory.

A Visiting Student is a student who has not been formally admitted to the University but who, as a bona fide student (must have successfully completed at least one three-unit course (half-course equivalent) at another accredited degree granting institution, is permitted to take courses for credit towards a degree program at his/her home institution.

(a) The Open Studies Visiting student is permitted to register, on a courtesy basis, with a written letter of approval. The official letter of permission and approval from the home institution gives the student permission to attempt to complete courses at the University of Calgary. The letter must indicate the specific number of courses as well as the term/year in which courses can be completed to a maximum of one year (two terms).

(b) Visiting students must complete an Application for Open Studies/Visiting Students. All students are required to submit:

a letter of permission from their home institution; and
a copy of their most recent home institution university transcript which includes all courses, grades and academic standing received. Visiting students are permitted to register for courses via MyUofC using their online Student Centre.
(c) Offshore applicants requiring acceptance letters for immigration purposes are required to submit their Open Studies/Visiting application and all required documents to Enrolment Services no later than June 1 for Fall Term, October 15 for Winter Term, and March 1 for Spring and/or Summer Intersession.

(d) Open Studies/Visiting are responsible for ordering his/her University of Calgary transcript to be sent to their home institution for reporting purposes.

(e) An Open Studies Visiting student will be subject to all rules and regulations applicable to students of the University of Calgary.

(f) Open Studies/Visiting students must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency requirement.

An Open Studies Exchange Student is a student who is admitted to the University of Calgary under a formal exchange agreement to enrol in courses that may transfer to a degree program at his/her home institution.

Open Studies Exchange students:

(a) Will be subject to all rules and regulations applicable to students of the University of Calgary.

(b) Must satisfy the University's English Language Proficiency requirement.

(c) Will have an official transcript sent the home institution. Grades are forwarded at the end of the Winter Term and Summer Term; if transcripts are required for convocation at the home institution, the student must request this.

(d) Must complete an Open Studies Exchange Student Application via the home institution's Exchange Co-ordinator. Permission to enrol and complete courses at the University of Calgary will be approved and submitted by the home institution. A most recent transcript including reflecting all courses completed and grades must be submitted. Open Studies Exchange students are permitted to register after admission and approval are administered.

(e) Open Studies Exchange Application and all required documentation must be submitted to the specific University of Calgary Exchange Co-ordinator who administers the exchange agreement for the prospective student.

Application Deadlines:

For Fall Term: June 1
For Winter Term: October 15
For Summer Term: March 1

(f) Prospective students will need to confirm administrative processes and eligibility with their home institution or with their Exchange Co-ordinator at the University of Calgary. Exchange Co-ordinators are responsible to review and validate all applications and documentation. Enrolment Services will process the applications submitted by Exchange Co-ordinators. Students requiring letters of acceptance for immigration purposes are encouraged to apply early due to varying processing times required by Canadian Immigration.

Note: It is the responsibility of the Exchange student to ensure selected courses are approved for transfer credit by their home institution prior to commencement of courses.
