Baccalaureate Degrees Offered

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance

Notes:

  • A Minor is offered in Dance.
  • A Concentration is offered in Choreography and Performance for Dance Majors
Introduction

The Department of Dance provides a four-year BA (Dance) degree that explores dance from multiple perspectives. Students delve into choreography, performance, technique, improvisation, dance for the camera, dance science, world dance, history, and theory in order to understand the place of dance in the twenty-first century. From ballet to contact improvisation, hip hop to contemporary, dance at the University of Calgary helps students gain in-depth experience as well as a broad understanding of a range of cultural forms. With equal emphasis on both practice and analysis, our liberal arts program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in professional performance, choreography, scholarship, and education, as well as further dance study in graduate programs.

For information on where to get program advice, see the Faculty of Arts website under http://arts.ucalgary.ca/undergraduate/student-support-program-resources.

In general, questions about overall programs should be addressed to the Student Success Centre (http://www.ucalgary.ca/ssc/), while questions about program details should be addressed to the Subject Advisor in the Department Office.

Admission to the BA in Dance

Applicants to the BA Dance degree program will be assessed on the basis of a dance audition, an Audition Form for the BA Dance and a Statement of Interest. The Department of Dance must receive audition forms for the BA (Dance) degree by February 1. Online audition form: http://dance.ucalgary.ca/auditions/.

Prospective students must also meet the criteria in the section of this Calendar on A.2 “Admission Requirements” at the University of Calgary.

Dance Audition

After submitting the basic University application and an Audition Form for admission to the BA Dance program by the deadlines, all applicants will be expected to audition.

Auditions are conducted by the BA Dance Committee and are held on the campus of the University of Calgary in March. At the audition, applicants will be required to participate in dance classes, written assignments and improvisation.

It is strongly suggested that applicants audition in person. Applicants who are unable to audition in person must send a DVD audition no later than February 1.

Limitation of Enrolment

Enrolment in the BA (Dance) program is limited. Therefore, all qualified applicants may not be admitted. Applicants will be admitted on the basis of the following criteria:

1. Academic standing in high school and/or previous post-secondary education (University admission requirements);

2. Written Statement of Interest;

3. Dance audition.
