Explores the place of Performance Studies within cultural and communications research, considering some of the foundational influences on the development of this interdisciplinary field (e.g. anthropological studies of ritual, folklore studies of performance, feminist research on performativity). Examines issues involved in the practical application of performance paradigms in research (e.g. performance writing and autoethnography, performance as epistemology, critical ethnography) and reviews thematic areas that characterize contemporary performance studies research (the body in performance, memory, tourism, etc.).
