The Division of Applied Psychology also participates in the Campus Alberta Master of Counselling (MC) initiative. The Campus Alberta Master of Counselling is a conjoint degree, developed and delivered through a partnership of the University of Calgary, Athabasca University, and the University of Lethbridge. The Campus Alberta Master of Counselling Program is a course-based, off-campus Master's program that is equivalent to the MEd in Counselling Psychology in the Division of Applied Psychology. Note: Students applying to Counselling are advised to complete Applied Psychology 419 (Communication Skills in Guidance) or equivalent before seeking admission.

(a)Normally, a minimum of two and one-half full-course equivalents in applied psychology and/or psychology. This must include at least one full-course equivalent in statistics and research design (Applied Psychology 301 and Applied Psychology 303, or equivalents). At least one half-course in each of developmental psychology, learning theory, and personality theory is highly recommended. Some specializations may require additional undergraduate courses in Psychology or Applied Psychology (e.g., Counselling).

(b)A résumé, and a concise rationale for the application (500 words or less)

(c)Students who plan to apply for chartering as psychologists after completing the programs should bear in mind that additional undergraduate and graduate courses in applied psychology and/or psychology may be required. Further information on chartering requirements can be obtained through the Division.

Note: While certification as a teacher is not required for admission, applicants should bear in mind that teacher certification is required for employment in most school systems.

Master of Counselling

(a)The Campus Alberta Master of Counselling Program normally requires at least three half-courses in psychology or educational psychology (including one course each in human development and learning). In addition, applicants are required to have a half-course in counselling skills or provide a demonstration of counselling skills, for example, in the form of a videotape submission.

(b)As part of the application process, students are required to submit a résumé and a concise rationale for the application. Related volunteer work or paid employment is an asset. All Campus Alberta applications must be completed on-line at http://www.abcounsellored.net.

(c)Students who plan to apply for chartering as psychologists after completing the program should bear in mind that additional undergraduate and graduate courses in applied psychology and/or psychology may be required. Further information on chartering requirements can be obtained through the Division.

Doctor of Philosophy

(a)A completed Master's degree in Applied Psychology or Psychology from an approved university

(b)A résumé and a concise rationale (500 words or less) for the application

For the MEd, MSc, and PhD programs, application is a two-step process. First, a Request for Application form must be completed. If the applicant appears to be eligible for the program on the basis of this pre-application, the Division will send an Application form. The deadline for the submission of complete applications is February 1 for September admission.

The deadline for the submission of complete applications to the Campus Alberta Master of Counselling program is May 15 for admission to courses beginning the following January. All applications to the Campus Alberta Master of Counselling program must be completed electronically, at http://www.abcounsellored.net.

The applicant must make advanced credit requests as part of the admission process. Credit will not be given for course work taken as part of another completed degree/diploma or for courses taken to bring grade point average to a required level for admission.

Master of Counselling

The Campus Alberta Master of Counselling Program consists of 12 half-courses.Core courses, required by all students, are listed below. The course descriptions appear later in this calendar. Doctor of Philosophy

Specific courses to be included in students' programs will depend on the specialization in which they are registered. First year students are assigned an interim advisor who will assist with course selection.

Applied experience is an asset, particularly for applicants to the Counselling Psychology or the School Psychology Areas. Applicants to the Master of Counselling program should have reasonable computer literacy because portions of the program are delivered on-line.

The Division does not normally accept undergraduate courses for credit toward graduate degrees.

Expected completion time is two years for the Master of Science degree and four years for the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Maximum completion time is four years for the Master of Science degree and six years for the Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Normally, Campus Alberta Master of Counselling students will complete their program in three years, but a 2-year completion time is possible for students who elect to do the program in a more intensive fashion.

An interim advisor is assigned to each first-year student. Students are responsible for initiating discussions with potential permanent supervisors and are expected to have finalized supervisory arrangements by their second annual registration.

Comprehensive examinations for the Master of Education program and candidacy examinations for the doctoral program both have written and oral components. Information on examinations is provided in the Division brochures.

Information on research proposals is available through the interim advisor/supervisor. Ethics approval is needed for all research projects involving the use of human subjects before data collection begins. To initiate the ethics review, the researcher must submit a copy of the application (available on the Research Services website) to the Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board, c/o Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Education.

Students applying for scholarships for September admission must submit their scholarship applications to the Division by the preceding February 1.

The Division also provides assistance for students through teaching assistantships, graduate research scholarships and other Divisional scholarships. Application forms and deadline information for these awards can be obtained from the Division.
