Strength Training for Osteoporosis Prevention

Summary

The goal of this project is to understand if strength training can prevent bone loss in peri- and early menopausal women. This 9-month strength training program for peri- and early menopausal women will examine the effect on bone loss and menopausal symptoms.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other

Eligible ages: 45 to 60

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

Females will be eligible to participate if they are:
1. 45 to 60 years old.
2. Peri- or early menopausal.

Exclusion criteria:

1. Postmenopausal women (women who have not had a menstrual cycle for more than 5 years).
2. Participants on osteoporosis medication (e.g., bisphosphonates).
3. Participants with co-morbidities such as metabolic bone disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, peripheral arterial disease.
4. Participants with low back pain, have herniated discs, orthopedic conditions, and anyone that suffered an osteoporotic fracture within the last 5 years.
5. Participants who have participated in progressive strength training programs within 6 months of the start of the study.
