Binge Eating, Personality, and Weight Bias in Men

Summary

Research on eating disorders in men is scarce. In this five-part study, we aim to compare personality traits among men with binge eating, bulimia nervosa, and no eating disorder. We also will describe sociocultural influences on disordered eating, including bias and stigma toward weight and attitudes toward eating. Participants will have the chance to win up to $350 in Amazon gift cards for full participation.

Participants will be asked to complete:

1. An initial eligibility interview via video (i.e., Zoom) or phone (30-45 minutes)
2. If eligible, an online survey one week following the initial interview (20-30 minutes)
3. A similar online survey one, two, and three months after the interview (20-30 minutes x 3 surveys = 60-90 minutes).

In total, this study should take 2.5 hours or less of your time. For participating in the initial interview, you will have the chance to be entered into a draw for a CAD$50 Amazon gift card. For eligible participants, you will be entered into a separate draw for a CAD$50 Amazon gift card for each survey that you answer. Additionally, you will be entered into a draw for a CAD$100 Amazon gift card if you answer all four surveys.

All participation is confidential.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible gender: Male

Eligible ages: 18 to 100

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

1. Men aged 18 or older.
2. Men:
a. With no current or past eating disorder - OR-
b. Who binge eat at least weekly - OR -
c. Who binge eat at least weekly and try to compensate (for example, exercise, diet,
use medication, cause self to vomit).
3. Fluent in spoken and written English.

Exclusion criteria:

1. People who do not identify as male.
2. Those under age 18.
3. People with current psychosis.
4. People not fluent in English.
