Three Things to Know about Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships and bursaries can help pay for your education. Here are three important things to know about them.

What’s the difference between a scholarship and a bursary?

A scholarship is based on academic achievement, but sometimes also on involvement in other areas, such as leadership and community service. A bursary has academic requirements, but it also requires students to have a demonstrated financial need.

At the University of Calgary, students are eligible for scholarships if they have at least a 3.2 GPA, and for bursaries if they have at least a 2.0 GPA. Visit this site for more details.

Where can I find information about scholarships and bursaries?

The university’s Awards & Scholarships page contains a full list of scholarships and bursaries, plus instructions about how to apply.

If you’re from Alberta, you can find other scholarships you can receive on the Alberta Student Aid website.

You can also visit a website like Scholarships Canada to find a list of other scholarships.

What types of scholarships and bursaries do UCalgary students get?

UCalgary students receive thousands of scholarships and bursaries every year. If you’re from Alberta and have at least a 3.2 GPA, make sure to apply for the Jason Lang Scholarship. Also, be sure to apply for the university’s Continuing Student Awards. The application for these opens on March 1 and has a deadline of May 1.
