While UCalgary gets ready for the upcoming fall semester, Residence Services is buzzing with excitement and energy as they welcome over 3,000 students home. An unprecedented 1,267 first-year students alongside over 100 returning students will be moving in on Move-in Day, Sunday, Aug. 25, with the remaining students moving in throughout the following week.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, students and families will descend on the university, eager to kick off a transformative chapter in their lives. They will be greeted by an energized and enthusiastic team of more than 150 dedicated student and staff volunteers who will be ready to help unload belongings and get students settled into their new home. The aim is to create an atmosphere of warmth, inclusivity, and unbridled enthusiasm from the moment they set foot on campus.

Community on campus

The wide variety of housing options offered by Residence Services — including shared dorm-style rooms for first-year students to full apartment living in upper years— emphasizes the importance of a supportive, healthy academic and social environment that will help students find the connections and experience they seek at university.

Brittanie Walker-Reid, director for Residence Services, says living on campus provides an unparalleled experience — especially for students looking for an authentic, vibrant environment to live and learn in.

“Living on campus isn’t just about housing. It’s about environment and access to resources that strengthen student experience on campus. It’s about the shared spirit of camaraderie, ability for growth and the countless possibilities that await students, academically and personally.” Walker-Reid says.

“Move-in Day is a celebration of that, but also a great way for students to meet their new neighbours and explore their new home at UCalgary."

Resources, support and connection

UCalgary campus is always bustling with activity, but not all that activity is in the classroom. For students living in residence, having easy access to academic support, leadership and volunteer opportunities and wellness programs, along with proximity to classes, recreation facilities and social events make living on campus a no-brainer.

All You Care to Eat meal plan

The All You Care to Eat meal plan ensures students have the food support they need to shine on campus. With multiple options of fresh food available, students can choose to eat whatever they like, whenever they like and as much as they need to nourish them throughout the academic year.

All You Care to Eat is available for all students on campus. Learn more about meal plans on the Unicard website.

What to look for on Move-in Day

Look for the many information booths at the Service Fair located outside the Aurora Quad. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers will help students navigate their meal plans and answer any questions they may have about living in residence. Unicard, Active Living and other student resources will also be on hand to answer any questions about campus life.

“Year after year, Move-in Day is one of the most exciting days on campus,” Walker-Reid says. “For most first-year students, this is their first experience of campus life, and we are fully prepared to support them in their many successes throughout their time at UCalgary.”
