Doctors Norm Campbell and Cy Frank are among the 86 new appointments made by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada on June 30, 2014. The Order of Canada was established in 1967 during Canada’s centennial year to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Norm Campbell: For his contributions as a researcher and public health advocate and for his commitment to improving the well-being of Canadians.
Campbell has developed several national programs associated with improvements in treatment and control of hypertension (high blood pressure) — the chronic medical condition in which blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. Canada has the world’s highest reported national rate. Improved hypertension control in Canada has been associated with reduced death and hospitalization from heart failure, heart attack and stroke. The Canadian programs are being used as the basis for interventions in other countries. Campbell is currently the president of the World Hypertension League that has a global mandate to assist national hypertension organizations prevent and control hypertension.
Campbell is a professor of medicine, community health sciences and physiology and pharmacology at the University of Calgary and is a member of the university’s Institute for Public Health and Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta.

As a renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Frank has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for Albertans living with orthopedic injuries or illness. His contributions to medicine as a surgeon, teacher, researcher and an advocate for his patients have had a profound impact on the people of Alberta. Currently president and chief executive officer of Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions, Frank has been a faculty member at the University of Calgary for almost 30 years while achieving national and international stature as a clinician-scientist.
