Killam scholars celebrated

At the annual dinner, all award recipients were recognized and pre-doctoral students had an opportunity to present their posters

The Killam Fund for Advanced Studies Program at the University of Calgary has been running for 44 years and the achievements of this year’s Killam scholars and award winners were celebrated on Tuesday Oct. 4.

At the annual dinner, all award recipients were recognized and pre-doctoral students had an opportunity to present their posters. Ian Hargreaves from the psychology department was among the presenters. He explained his examination of electrophysiological recordings of brain activity while participants read single words in order to distinguish the unique contributions of different cortical areas to our experience of word meaning.

Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarships are awarded to doctoral students of outstanding caliber, with many Killam scholars also holding significant awards at the national and provincial level. The awards have a full value of $36,000 annually for two years.

A Killam Post-Doctoral Fellowship enables an exceptional new scholar to work at the university to consolidate his or her research training, develop and initiate original research in the discipline, and participate in and contribute to the activities of the host department or unit.

This year, the University of Calgary was proud to have 26 pre-doctoral and two post-doctoral recipients of these prestigious awards. Since 1967, over $5,500,000 has been awarded to University of Calgary students from the Killam Trusts.
