'I did not imagine that I would be working in hospitals amidst a global pandemic'

Fourth-year nursing student and Undergraduate Nursing Society president Keelin Fenske feels honoured to be a part of the future of health care
Keelin Fenske

“Hi! My name is Keelin Fenske, and I am a University of Calgary nursing student going into my fourth year in the fall. I am also the President of the Undergraduate Nursing Society, a student-run club which aims to empower and engage nursing students.

When I started nursing school in 2018, I had no idea that it would turn into my passion. I have loved all the skills, critical thinking, and experiences I have had, and my nursing practice has been impacted in such meaningful ways. I remember feeling uncertain about choosing the path that I did, but I can without a doubt say it has been the best decision of my life.

As we know, the COVID-19 pandemic has been an immensely challenging time for all. I have felt the effects of isolation, fear, and wavering resiliency, as people are feeling isolated and frontline heroes are feeling the strain.

Everyone has been impacted and required to adapt to the circumstances, including my own nursing practice. I did not imagine that I would be working in hospitals amidst a global pandemic, but I am honoured to be a nursing student during times like these. I am honoured to be able to care for patients when it is needed most and work alongside a multitude of talented health-care professionals. I am truly honoured to be a part of the future of health care.

To aid our province in the fight against COVID-19, I have been working in COVID immunization clinics and educating myself on ways I can help create positive change. I am eager to finish my nursing degree in April 2022 and pursue my dream career in critical care. And I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had to continue my education with the supportive UCalgary Faculty of Nursing.”
