A year marked by conflict and political instability across the globe added new levels of uncertainty to Canada’s already turbulent energy landscape. The PETRONAS International Energy Speaker Series has always addressed tough questions and timely topics facing Canada’s energy industry. On Feb. 6, 2025, Anne Applebaum, an expert on global affairs, will continue the tradition.

The Pulitzer-prize winning historian and prolific author will share timely insights into how global power dynamics influence the energy landscape in a world dealing with the complexities of energy transition, changing politics, war and sustainability.

Applebaum has written extensively on political systems, authoritarian regimes and international relations, including in her new book, Autocracy, Inc: The Dictators Who What to Run the World. Drawing her insights from historical trends and current global challenges, she will bring her vast knowledge of geopolitics to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of energy.

Joining Applebaum onstage will be Jackie Forrest, executive director at ARC Energy Research Institute. Together, they’ll explore how geopolitical tensions shape energy policies and what this means for the future of business, government and society.
