Giving Day is an opportunity to make a difference in students' lives
While students aren’t physically on campus today, many will be taking to social media to follow the progress of the University of Calgary’s first-ever Giving Day.
“Giving Day really excited me and it’s because I know what it feels like to get a scholarship. It changed my life. By giving even $5 on Giving Day, you have the opportunity to change a person’s life,” says Hana Kadri, BA’15, now a first-year Werklund School of Education student.
Between 11 a.m. on April 27 and 1 p.m. on April 29, community members will make a difference, not only in the lives of students, but also in the lives of our fellow Calgarians — by giving to student scholarships on Giving Day.
“There’s a lot of passion on campus and I think students have a lot of good ideas,” says Ryan Wallace, a student in the Haskayne School of Business. “To be able to dedicate some of their time to develop their ideas within the university, they’re able to really make a positive contribution to campus, and I think that really prepares the people who are graduating to better contribute to Calgary.”
Scholarships don’t just relieve students from having to get a part-time job or take out student loans, they also enable them to fully engage with their studies, their campus and their community.
“By providing students with scholarships, you’re allowing them to pursue their goals and aspirations, and that allows them to potentially change the world,” says Sagar Grewal, who is completing his kinesiology degree with a major in biomechanics.
Every student at the University of Calgary has the opportunity to make an impact on our campus and in our broader community. Through initiatives like Giving Day, we can begin breaking down barriers for students so they can reach their full potential.
