May 2024 - Many announcements!!!!

  • Dr. Egberts travels to Minneapolis to speak about environmental contamination of graphene at the STLE 2024 Annual Meeting.

April 2024: Jackson Uhryn defends his MSc thesis. Congratulations Jackson!!!!!

December 2023 - Dr. Egberts appointed Associate Dean of Engineering Physics.

December 2023 - Chaochen's paper on friction properties of germanium thin films and their application to triboelectric nanogenerators is published in the journal Small. Congrats Chaochen!!!! [link]

April 2023 - Congrats to Chaochen for winning the Peter J. Blau Best Poster Award at the Wear of Materials Conference in Banff!!!!

April 2023 - Congratulations to Dr. Chaochen Xu whose paper was accepted and available online examining the impact of water intercalation on the friction performance of 2D materials [link]. Also, congratulations to Drs. Leo Alarcan and Babak Soltannia and Jackson Uhryn for getting their paper on greases made with sustainable thickeners published. [link]

January 2023 - Happy New Year! Congratulations to Dr. Chaochen Xu whose paper finally was released to the public! This work was a great example of listening and collaborating together, as it comes from opposing views on how to prepare graphene between Drs. Xu and Egberts! Thank you for the hard work everyone and to Justin Ye for providing the simulation support! [link to paper].

December 2022 - Dr. Egberts gave an invited talk at IndiaTrib! Was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with past colleagues, especially Dr. Nitya Nand Gosvami, and meet all the tribologists in India. Thank you very much for the opportunity to come!

June 2022 - Dr. Egberts gives an invited talk at the CMSE 2022 annual meeting. And Malcolm Macdonald and Babak Soltannia attend the GRS/GRC Tribology conference!

May 2022 - After some return to normalcy during the winter term of 2022 and lots of training and lab work, we are welcoming many newcomers to the Nanotribology Lab this spring! We welcome:

  • Vinay Saini - A new postdoc joining us from the group of Dr. Bijwe at IIT Delhi.
  • Aleks Berezowski - a NSERC USRA second year software engineer from the UofC.
  • Rosivaldo Oliveira - a Mitacs Globalink undergraduate student from the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil.
  • Sahil Masoom - a Mitacs Globalink undergraduate student from IIT Patna in India.
  • Sebastian Sudak - a third undergraduate summer student of Dr. Qiao Sun's collaborating with us from University of Alberta in Mechanical Engineering.

October 2021 - We welcome Chaochen Xu to the group from Tsinghua University and the group of Qunyang Li.

September 2021 - We are returning to in person lectures and learning! Good luck everyone and stay safe. Some other news:

July 2021 - Welcome to Babak Soltannia! He is joining our group (and Dr. Milana Trifkovic's) from the University of Alberta where he recently completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He is joining the group as a postdoctoral fellow to help us link rheology of greases with their friction reducing properties. Welcome Babak!

June 2021 - Congratulations to Zahra on getting her second paper published on her measurements of the out-of-plane elastic modulus of graphene. The link to her paper can be found here [link].

May 2021 - May is an exciting month. So many announcements to make!

  • We have two new undergraduate students joining the lab. Raksha Achar and David Sovboda, both second year engineering students. Welcome to the lab and I hope you have a great time even with the COVID restrictions in place.
  • We also have two new MSc students joining the group! Welcome Malcolm MacDonald from Western Engineering and Jackson Uhryn from UCalgary Mechanical Engineering! It is great to have you two join the group.
  • Jitendra, Edwin and Arun's paper on understand wear-corrosion mechanisms of carbon steel used to transport hydraulic fracturing fluids is accepted into Tribology International [link]. Congrats to the three of you for all of your hard work.
  • Jitendra Panda has decided to leave us to join CTK Bio Canada in Port Coquitlam, British Colombia to help them with their R&D projects. Congrats to Jitendra, and we will miss you in the lab!

April 29th 2021 - Zahra Abooalizadeh successfully defended her PhD thesis! Congrats Zahra!!!!

April 2021 - Jitendra and Edwin's paper on statistical analysis of formulated hydraulic fracturing fluid is accepted for publication in Tribology Letters [link]. Congrats!

January 2021 - Preet Patel, a second year student at the Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur, was selected for a Mitacs Globalink fellowship to join our group this summer. Congratulations Preet and welcome to the group!

September 2020 - Arun Mohanty joins the group to complete an MEng project on protecting steel pipes used in hydraulic fracturing. Welcome Arun!

September 2020 - Nic Chan has decided to leave the group and chase some other goals. Best of luck to you Nic! We will miss you!

July 2019 - Dr. Egberts and Zahra Abooalizadeh attend the Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscopy conferece in Regensburg, Germany. 

July 2019 - Zahra's first paper comes out in the Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology on measuring mechanical properties of atomic defects on HOPG surfaces! Congrats Zahra!!! [link]

June 2019 - Dr. Egberts awarded a Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers for his Sabbatical stay in the group of Dr. Roland Wiesendanger at the University of Hamburg.

June 2019 -  Jitendra Panda joins the Nanotribology Lab to work on tribocorrosion projects and nanoparticle enhanced lubricants. Welcome Jitendra!

May 2019 - Dr. Egberts and Brandon Wong attend the STLE Annual meeting in Nashville, TN.

November 2018 - Hossein's paper describing how ultrasonic actuation of nanoscale contacts is accepted in Nanotechnology! Congrats Hossein! [link]

October 2018 - Hossein successfully defends his PhD Thesis! Congrats Hossein on the huge accomplishment!!!!!

September 2018 - We successfully moved back to the mechanical engineering building, and nothing broke!!! Thanks to everyone that made this possible!

June 2018 - Jesus and Penny attend the Gordon Research Conference on Tribology!  Great discussions and ideas were shared - watch out for some interesting publications in the next months!

April 29th, 2014 - Paper available online examining the friction properties of CVD grown graphene on polycrystalline substrates.

January 28th, 2014 - Xin's paper examining the influence of low out-of-plane mechanical rigidity of graphene films and the effect of environment on adhesive forces between an AFM tip and the graphene substrate is now available online.  Congrats Xin on your first first-author publication - Job well done! [link to paper]
