The lymphatic system is composed of a dense network of lymphatic vessels, which plays a vital role in physiological processes such as tissue fluid homeostasis and transport of antigens and immune cells to and from lymphoid tissue. These two functions are critically important during inflammation to minimize the associated edema and initiate a proper immune response. My research program is focused on the physiology of the lymphatic vessels and on mechanisms related to the propulsion of lymph and alteration of these functions during inflammation. Investigations are articulated around four major axes:
Mechanisms of generation and modulation of lymphatic pumping.
- Generation of lymphatic pumping – origin of pacemaker potentials.
- Role of the endothelium and endothelium-released factors in modulation of lymphatic pumping.
- Modulation of lymphatic pumping and pacemaker potentials by vasoactive and inflammatory mediators.
Basis of mechanical stimulation of lymphatic pumping.
- Modulation of lymphatic pumping and pacemaker potentials by vessel distention and transmural pressure.
- Identification of lymphatic mechanosensitive mechanisms.
Chemical communication between lymphatic vessels and neighbouring tissues and cells.
- Cross-talk between lymphatic vessels and immune cells.
- Interactions with immune cells.
Lymphatic vessel functions in animal models of inflammation.
- Alteration of lymphatic contractility and lymph flow during intestinal inflammation.
- Modulation by COX metabolites, nitric oxide and cytokines.
- Alteration of immune cell trafficking.
