Chancellor Emeritus Joanne Cuthbertson, BEd’73, Hon. LLD’11, and business leader Charlie Fischer, BSc (Eng)’71, MBA’82, Hon. LLD’04, had a vision to support, challenge and connect our remarkable undergraduates and provide them with the foundation to dream bigger and reach higher — and so the Scholars Academy was born. Developed as a community for top students, the Academy provides mentorship, practical guidance and critical goal-setting assistance to our most ambitious cohorts.
Pay tribute to a friend — and empower others like him
When Brett Wiese’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 20, fellow Haskayne School of Business student Colton Lewis, BComm’15, channelled his energy into honouring his friend — and helping other students like Brett. The Brett Wiese Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to Bachelor of Commerce students who share Brett’s positive, ambitious and caring spirit.
Give students an extra push
Looking back on his undergraduate experience, Luke Neilson, BA’19, would have loved a push to aim for a competitive writing award — and so he created that opportunity for others like him. While still working towards his own honours degree, Neilson set up a unique scholarship for the student with the most outstanding honours thesis submitted to the Department of Philosophy.
Support students beyond the first four years
Many parents and students tend to save only for an undergraduate degree, making graduate school less attainable for some. So when sisters Safia Nathoo, BSc’07, MSc’09, MBA’14, and Nabeela Nathoo, BSc’09, PhD’14, MD’17, were looking for a way to give back to their alma mater, they took inspiration from the donors whose scholarships helped them through their 10-plus years of advanced education at UCalgary. The Nathoo Family Graduate Scholarship is awarded to Faculty of Graduate Studies students who, like the Nathoo sisters, are involved in leadership and volunteer activities.
Empower business students with a game-changing scholarship
Thanks to a gift from the Haskayne family, the best and brightest incoming Bachelor of Commerce students have a unique opportunity for a game-changing, full-ride scholarship worth $100,000. The Richard and Lois Haskayne Legacy Scholarship is the largest and most prestigious at the Haskayne School of Business, helping the school recruit high-achieving students and, ultimately, benefitting the community as an investment in our youth.
Empower student-athletes
The Dinos 5th Quarter Association, together with the Forzani Group Foundation, the Flames Foundation for Life and the View West Foundation, donated $1.5 million to create the John Forzani Memorial Athletic Awards, which provides scholarships for student-athletes on the Dinos football team.
Transform education teaching
The historic, $25-million donation from David Werklund, Hon. LLD’12 — the largest gift ever received by a Canadian education faculty — changed the way education is taught at UCalgary by making new technology available, enriching student scholarships, developing international teaching exchanges, and establishing a fund for undergraduate conferences and research.
Take business education to the next level
A $20-million gift from Calgary business leader Ronald P. Mathison, chairman of MATCO Investments Ltd., has helped fund a second building for the Haskayne School of Business, adjacent to Scurfield Hall. When it opens in 2022, Mathison Hall will offer business students a state-of-the-art learning environment, provide much-needed classroom space and elevate excellence for Calgary’s future business leaders.
Build a better solar-powered home on campus to provide teaching and learning opportunities for solar energy and sustainability research
Sponsored by Cenovus, the project engaged students from the Schulich School of Engineering, the Faculty of Environmental Design (now the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape), and the Haskayne School of Business in constructing a prototype solar-powered house for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. The Cenovus Spo’pi Solar House is a two-bedroom, 935-square-metre house intended to provide alternative housing for Indigenous communities. There are more than 30 solar panels on the roof and the building actually generates more energy than it consumes.
