The University of Calgary Endowment a vital strategic asset and enduring source of revenue that drives the university’s mission. Made up of 1,634 individual funds, each established to support a specific area such as research, student experience or financial aid, the endowment generates enough income to support these priority areas while maintaining the fund’s real value, after inflation in perpetuity.

The University of Calgary Investment Committee, under the oversight of the Board of Governors, carefully monitors the impact of current market conditions and the performance of the university’s endowment investment portfolio. The Investment Committee has currently set the annual allocation rate at 3.50% for the 2023-24 fiscal year. The annual investment rate of return of the University of Calgary’s endowment funds for the year ending March 31, 2023, was 2.8%. On a relative basis, the fund outperformed the benchmark annual return of 0.24%. Returns were higher over the prior year due to strong investment performance within the Low Volatility and Absolute Return asset classes. Despite the weaker market environment, the endowment fund continued to increase in value through a conservative, risk-adjusted investment approach.

The overall market value of the endowment as of March 31, 2023 is $1,189,628,000
