Michelle Aktary $5,800
Doctor of Philosophy (Kinesiology)
Faculty of Graduate Studies
I would like to express my sincerest gratitude for your scholarship support. I am a registered dietitian and a third-year PhD student. I began my graduate studies in the MSc program and transferred to a PhD to broaden my research on policy impacts on health and diet inequities. Specifically, my research focuses on food insecurity and diet quality among low-income adults and families, and the potential long-term dietary and health benefits of a targeted policy. As a mother to a now-two-year-old girl, the awarded scholarship has afforded me the financial support to focus on my research and education while caring for my daughter. This is particularly meaningful given the social challenges imposed by the current pandemic. Thank you again for your generous support. I am truly grateful!

Hal Kvisle Distinguished Business Leader Bursary
This bursary is offered annually to continuing undergraduate students in the Haskayne School of Business, based on academic merit and financial need.
I wanted to thank you for generously awarding me with the Hal Kvisle Distinguished Leader Bursary. I was so honoured to receive this scholarship and I am deeply appreciative of your support. Over five years ago, my dad lost his job during the downturn in the oil industry, leading to a very stressful time for my family. Receiving this scholarship has meant so much to me by helping lighten my financial burden. I am currently a second-year marketing student with the hopes of pursuing marketing or management in the future. My creativity and leadership sparked my passion for business and, with the help from the scholarship, I will be able to continue to pursue it. Thank you again for your generosity and support. Receiving this scholarship has been such an immense help.

Dinuri Gunasekera $1,200
Bachelor of Commerce - Honours (Business Analytics)
Haskayne School of Business
I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the Harry Booth Bursary. Throughout the completion of my undergraduate degree, I will be involved in many additional commitments like completing the co-op program, being enrolled in the Honours program, obtaining an Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies, completing a minor and playing in the university’s competitive volleyball intramural league. In addition to my regular tuition, the accumulated costs of all these commitments result in high university expenses. I want to express my thanks for lessening this burden on me and contributing to further my learning. I truly appreciate you all for recognizing my achievements and potential and for helping me continue my academic journey.

In the past year, I was honoured to receive the John S. Poyen Scholarship. This award has provided me with great financial assistance at the beginning of my PhD career. The past academic year was very challenging for me, so receiving this award was a welcome reminder that I am still on the right track with my program and that I am making progress. This award helped me feel rejuvenated and excited about school again. It truly means a lot.

R.A. MacKimmie, OC, QC Award for Outstanding Contribution
Thank you very much for your generous donation. I am a first-generation university student and now law student, the daughter of a stay-at-home mom and a Saskatchewan grain farmer. Without the support of loans, grants and scholarships like this one, I could not have pursued any post-secondary education, let alone a law degree. Awards like these play a critical role in allowing me, and students like me, to achieve their full potential. After school, I look forward to settling in Calgary and practising intellectual property law.
