Chair in Business Law and Regulation
Dr. Ryan Clements, SJD, is an assistant professor and the Chair in Business Law and Regulation at the University of Calgary. Dr. Clements continues his research in corporate and securities law, banking and financial market regulation, financial technology, blockchain and crypto-assets, financial product innovation and investment funds, financial crises, and systemic risk.
Together with Bryce Tingle, Dr. Clements leads the Finance Regulation Program (FRP) in the Faculty of Law. During the 2021-22 academic year, several core programs were established, a new business law website and podcasts were launched and student opportunities grew. In addition, the first Banff Capital Markets Roundtable Symposium was held in November 2022.
Dr. Clements also helped to establish the Law Student FinTech Writing Program at the Banking and Finance Law Review. Students can focus on any aspect of law and financial technology that relates to the growth of fintech, its regulation and impact on the financial industry in Canada and internationally. The second annual program is currently being planned, with a submission deadline of June 16, 2023.
Dr. Clements continues to publish on various topics in fintech, financial-product innovation, securities and derivatives law in international anthologies, peer-reviewed and U.S. law reviews. Click here for a list of his publications and media contributions.
In July 2022, Dr. Clements was appointed to the newly established Canadian Securities Administrators Investor Advisory Panel (CSA IAP). The CSA IAP will provide insight into retail investors’ interests and support the CSA’s policy development, strengthening Canada’s capital markets while enhancing investor protection. It will also promote co-ordination and enhancement of pan-Canadian investor-related issues.
