Celebrate and preserve western history

A gift from Bill and Sharon Siebens and family brought together two of western Canada’s leading learning institutions to create an innovative approach to community-based research: the Glenbow Western Research Centre at the University of Calgary. The centre is home to the university’s Archives and Special Collections, including the remarkable Glenbow Library and Archive. This world-class collection elevates UCalgary’s Libraries and Cultural Resources, providing enhanced engagement with teaching, research and public interest in Western Canada.

Empower Indigenous youth

A $125,000 donation from Gary Nissen helped launch the Social Work Indigenous Scholars Academy (ISA), dedicated to “transforming social work from the inside.” In creating the ISA, the Faculty of Social Work will be reshaped with the goal of preserving Indigenous culture by integrating Indigenous perspectives, histories and language in the academy’s curriculum.

Keep the music alive

Universal Music Canada’s donation of its archive of music label EMI Music Canada to UCalgary’s Libraries and Cultural Resources (in partnership with the National Music Centre) was a major campaign milestone. The archives provide an unprecedented opportunity for detailed examination of the operations of a multinational record company in Canada, provide considerable details about EMI Canada’s operations, and are a window into Canada’s cultural landscape over the last 50 years.
