4th
Street: Existing Structure
Fourth
Street is a vital commercial strip within the neighbourhoods of Cliff Bungalow
and Mission and the city as a whole. There are a number of qualities
that attract people to the street.
These
include:
-
Variety
of building typologies - most of which are at a pedestrian scale
-
Permeable
buildings - many entry points along the street
-
Variety
of commercial business
-
Streetscape
elements (street furniture, art, trees, etc.) that accommodate the comfort
of the pedestrian
-
A continuity
of building frontage along the sidewalk
-
Street
parking - provides a nice buffer between the pedestrian and vehicular traffic
Conversely,
there are some qualities which detract from the street as well.
These
include:
-
Building
typologies which overwhelm the streetscape
-
Buildings
that have only one or two entry points - creating a more impermeable streetscape
-
Streetscape
elements are minimal, or placed in ineffective places relative to shadow,
wind, etc.
-
A disjointing
of building frontage continuity - often created by surface parking lots
adjacent to the sidewalk

today.
