Greg Vavra, UCalgary alumnus (BComm ’83 & LLB ’91)
Coach, business leader and retired CFL player

UCalgary alumnus Greg Vavra, is a lawyer with over 25 years of corporate experience in the energy sector. He is no stranger to the University of Calgary Dinos’ football program. He quarterbacked the Dinos to their first Vanier Cup in 1983 and became the first University of Calgary player to win the Hec Crighton Trophy as the most outstanding player in Canadian college football. He was the Canada West all-star quarterback from 1980 to 1983 and was the All-Canadian quarterback in 1983.

Vavra is the school’s all-time leading passer, and is the only Dinos football player to have his number (17) retired. He was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1995.

After graduating from the University of Calgary, Vavra played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos and BC Lions.

In 2006, Vavra returned to the Dinos, joining the coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator, and can be seen on-field coaching quarterbacks. He is an active member of the Dinos Fifth Quarter Alumni Association. Vavra has spent countless hours helping the growth of young athletes at the university over many decades.

Vavra holds both a commerce degree and law degree from the University of Calgary.
