News From The Students Association
The EVDS Student Association (EVDS-SA) is a volunteer student council. It is organized and operated by the students within each discipline of the faculty; Architecture, Planning, Environmental Science, Industrial Design and the new General Program. Over the past year, The SA has been involved in a Faculty wide restructuring, (in addition to some very entertaining and unusual social events!).
This ongoing evolution has resulted in numerous changes in the EVDS administrative structure for 1997/1998. Not least among them is the creation of the new Dean's Advisory Council. With this council the SA, and in particular the president, assume a much greater role and responsibility on behalf of the student body. Students will now have a more effective and efficient avenue for voicing their concerns. This is insured through the President's role on the Dean's Advisory Council as a full voting member. It is unprecedented for a student body to be accorded such responsibility within a professional faculty. The Student Association is naturally excited about the increased involvement within the internal workings of the Faculty.
In addition to the administrative restructuring there is currently a re-examination of the core curriculum. This core curriculum is central to the multi-disciplinary nature of the EVDS Faculty at The University of Calgary and is one of the founding principles on which the Faculty is based. Student representatives are currently working with faculty members to ensure the continued relevance and importance of these core courses for all students.
In preparation for the 97/98 Fall Semester a cooperative student/Faculty committee is organizing the welcoming orientation camp for new students. This orientation camp will serve the dual purpose of registering incoming students and acquainting them with each other and members of the faculty and support staff. Hey, these things are fun!
All of the changes of the past year will provide new challenges and opportunities for the Student Association Executive. We endeavor to serve the student body!
