Aris Press

Publishing in the environmental design field in Canada is currently under-represented. Aris Press has recently been created as an entity in the Faculty of Environmental Design for publishing works on architecture, industrial design, landscape design and urbanism. An ongoing series of books will be co-published with the University of Calgary Press as Imprint Publications. The series would focus substantially on small books such as exhibition catalogues, lectures, design manuals and monographs. It is hoped that 1-3 such books could be produced each year. Finding funds for individual projects would be undertaken by authors and Aris Press. The design and production of each publication project would be the responsibility of Aris Press. The coordination of printing and distribution of the publications would be handled by the University of Calgary Press. Aris Press is currently soliciting manuscripts in the appropriate topic areas.

The first title co-published by Aris Press and the University of Calgary Press was launched this October and is entitled Twelve Modern Houses 1945-1985. The book is based on the exhibition of the same name showing at The Nickle Arts Museum at the University of Calgary, co-curated by Graham Livesey, Michael McMordie and Geoffrey Simmins. The book features twelve houses designed by prominent Canadian architects, including Raymond Affleck, Jack Long, Arthur Erickson, Douglas Cardinal and Patkau Architects, drawn from the Canadian Architectural Archives, and includes an introductory essay, comprehensive documentation, and short interpretations of each house. Copies may be purchased in various bookstores nationally, and directly from the University of Calgary Press for $11.95.
