Project Process

Agenda for September 26, 2009 consultationAgenda for September 26, 2009 consultationThe core of the project process revolves around the 100 consultation participants. Participants were  chosen with the aim of representing a balanced demographic distribution of Canada, taking into account region, age, gender, ethnicity, occupation etc. Working with the method set out by the WWViews International project, participants took part in a consultation on September 26, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta. Key questions were discussed and then voted on in topics similar to those that will be discussed in Copenhagen. Citizens had the opportunity to learn what competing experts and stakeholder groups think, to test their ideas against those of people holding different views, and to reach a considered judgment. All participating countries answered the same questions. Results were be uploaded to the WWViews International database throughout the day, and made continuously available to the public via the website. Participants then had the task of formulating recommendations for future action.

WWViews took place 2½ months before the United Nations Climate Change conference, and a final report was be given to Canadian UN delegates to inform their decision-making in Copenhagen. A final report with compiled voting results from all participating nations was delivered at the COP 15 negotations as well.

A separate research project will be conducted, using WWViews as a case study. The research project will analyze the WWViews process and participant experiences, and examine the relations between environmental citizenship and global public participation.
