Project managers from 44 countries
World Wide Views on Global Warming (WWViews) is an international public consultation project, spearheaded by the Danish Board of Technology and the Danish Cultural Institute. These two institutions are leading the global project, as Denmark will be hosting the next round of international climate change negotiations. The Danish Board of Technology is an independent body set up by the Danish Parliament, and is responsible for advising the Danish government in matters pertaining to technology. It is also known for its innovations in participatory models.
WWViews is being held in preparation for the next United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in Copenhagen (COP15) in December 2009. Key decisions will be made at COP15 for the post-2012 period, when the
Kyoto Protocol expires, that will shape climate change policies for
years to come. The goal of the project is to allow ordinary citizens the opportunity to contribute directly to international climate policy decisions. Over 40 countries will be taking part in the WWViews project. The Canadian consultation is led by a team from the University of Calgary. On September 26, 2009, a group of 100 Canadian citizens will met in Calgary. Key questions on climate change and related policy will be discussed and then voted on. All participating countries will hold consultations on the same day, and will answer the same questions. Results will be uploaded live, and will be made available to the public via the WWViews International website. Results and a final report will be presented to COP15 delegates, the first time non-stakeholder citizen voices will be heard at an international climate change forum. WWViews is the first global project of its kind, and will set a ground-breaking precedent for
ordinary citizens to have a voice within global political processes.
Citizens around the world will be affected by the decisions made at COP15, and should be consulted before the international negotiations. WWViews will engage ordinary citizens in discussions on climate policy and will give them a chance to make their voices heard.
