Understanding Human Resources for Academic Leaders
This session will provide a foundational understanding of Human Resources, offering a high-level overview of HR's structure and functions within the academic environment. You will gain valuable insights into the various roles and responsibilities of HR, learn how to effectively engage with your HR partner, and discover best practices for collaboration. Whether you are new to your leadership role or looking to enhance your HR knowledge, this session will equip you with the essential tools to support and manage your faculty effectively.

Addressing Staff Misconduct at UCalgary: Investigation Procedures, Conflict Management and Prevention, and Managing Legal Risks
This session will provide an overview of UCalgary’s formal process for reviewing and responding to staff professional misconduct issues. In particular, we will review the Protected Disclosure and Research Integrity Procedures. We will help you better understand your role if you receive a disclosure, responsibilities to report disclosures, and best practices for managing legal risks. Using case examples, we will provide insight into the Protected Disclosure and Research Integrity Office’s initial process for assessing complaints, including how we decide whether an institutional response is warranted and deciding between informal and formal routes. We will also discuss prevention strategies and conflict management approaches to assist you as leaders when responding to concerns which may not reach the threshold of a formal institutional response.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the role of the Protected Disclosure and Research Integrity Office (PDRIO), how and when to access our assistance.
- Understand your obligations in your leadership role for receiving and reporting disclosures of misconduct or wrongdoing.
- Understand the basic principles that the PDRIO relies upon to determine whether a complaint warrants and institutional response, whether a response should be formal or informal.
- Increase your comfort level with addressing conflict.

Effective Leadership for Academic Leaders in a Unionized Environment
This course focuses on a few key topics that leaders will encounter in the course of their duties. These topics include informal and formal approaches to managing performance in a unionized environment, managing workplace absence, and managing workplace accommodation requests. Participants will learn strategies and procedures to help them navigate these topics and will be provided with activities to enforce learning.
Learning Outcomes
Participants should leave this session with an understanding:
- Informal and formal approaches to performance management in a unionized environment as well as when to use either approach
- Procedures to follow when managing workplace absence
- Procedures to follow when dealing with workplace accommodation requests
