Join us for a stimulating discussion by Dennis Gruending, author and former MP as he looks at individuals who are providing a peace witness based in Canadian churches. The voices of churches, religious organizations and individuals within them advocating for peace have been muted in recent years, as progressives have been marginalized by the strength of the wider conservative movements. This talk will profile courageous individuals and the work they are doing on behalf of peace.
Dennis Gruending is an Ottawa-based author, blogger and a former Member of Parliament. He worked for years as a print and television journalist and as a host for CBC Radio.
Dennis has been writing a blog called Pulpit and Politics since 2007 and in it he explores the connections between faith and public life. This fall Kingsley Publishing (Calgary) released his latest book called Pulpit and Politics: Competing Religious Ideologies in Canadian Public Life. In it, Dennis examines the growing competition between religious progressives and conservatives for power and influence in the Canadian public square.
Dennis is the author of six previous books, including the best selling Great Canadian Speeches. He has also written biographies of Emmett Hall, whose Royal Commission recommended medicare for Canada, and of former Saskatchewan premier Allan Blakeney.
Prior to serving as a Member of Parliament, Dennis worked as Director of Information for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in Ottawa between 1990 and 1994.
He holds an Honours degree in English literature from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters in Journalism and Communications from Carleton University.
Dennis and his wife Martha live in Ottawa. They have two adult daughters
His book Pulpit and Politics: Competing Religious Ideologies in Canadian Public Life will be available for puurchase during the event.
