Social work dean wins national award
By Lynne Dulaney-MacNicol
Dr. Gayla Rogers, dean of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of
Social Work, is being honoured as an exemplar of her profession
with a distinguished service award.
The award is given annually by the Canadian Association of
Social Workers (CASW) during National Social Work Week to an
individual or group of individuals selected from their membership
by each CASW organization. Rogers receives the award on March
16 in recognition of her years of service and leadership and her strong
advocacy of social work.
Rogers, BSW’74, MSW’78, began teaching in the faculty in 1978
and became its first female dean in 1998. She leads one of the largest
schools of social work in Canada, educating students at the bachelors,
masters and doctoral levels to work on the front lines as well as in leadership
positions. She has spearheaded the faculty’s transformation over
the past nine years into an internationally-respected school
of social work.
On the national level, Rogers was a director on the board of
the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work and served
as a member of CASSW’s Board of Accreditation. From 2000 to 2003,
she chaired the Canadian Association of Deans and Directors of Schools
of Social Work. Rogers also serves as a member of the Professional Social
Work Education Board for the Alberta College of Social Work.
On the community level, Rogers is a member of the Council of
Champions of the Children’s Initiative, a director on the boards
of Katimavik and HomeFront: Society
for the Prevention of Family Violence. She has also served
as a director on the Calgary YWCA board.
