REFERENCE SOURCES
FOR LINGUISTICS

Within the University of Calgary Library, most material relating to Linguistics is classed according to the Library of
Congress Classification "P". When looking for information on the Library's Online Catalogue, the following subject
headings will be of use:
- LINGUISTICS - deals with the scientific study of human speech, including phonetics, phonemics,
morphology and syntax.
- LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGES - used for material dealing with language in general, with the
origin and history of language and surveys of languages.
- PHILOLOGY - used for works dealing with both language and
literature.
- SYNTAX and MORPHOLOGY headings are both used as sub-divisions with individual languages. For
example, Danish Language - Syntax.
The following basic reference works are located in the Reference Collection, 2nd
Floor, MacKimmie Library Block.
