Joining IEEE
Just so that you are aware, you need to be an IEEE Student member (part of the international organization) to be able to join our Student Branch. Once you are an IEEE Student member, you may join the University of Calgary Student Branch for free. If you are already convinced, click here (see below on how to join).

Why Join IEEE?
Most of our events are offered to students irrespective of their status as IEEE members. However, to officially join the IEEE, one must sign up through the IEEE, at a cost of $31.80 US (as opposed to $159.70 US for non-students) . So why should one become a member? Here are some of the benefits of joining the organization (more benefits):
- Conference Discounts: IEEE Conference cost for non-members: $500 - $1200. Conference cost for
IEEE Student Member: $70 - $150. Conferences are an excellent way to learn more about a field and to network with professionals. Check out the IEEE conferences (if you just want to browse them, search 2010).
- Participation in Student Branch Council: It's a requirement of IEEE Canada to be a member in order to participate in the Student Branch council. Of course, being involved in the council has many benefits (see below).
- IEEE Awards and Scholarships: Gain recognition and enhance your resumé with an IEEE award or Scholarship. Up to US $250,000 is awarded to IEEE Student Members per year! Check out the following two links: 1 2. Programs are available for undergraduate and graduate students, and also include student paper contests and IEEE Student Branch Contests.
- Free Software: By being a student member of IEEE, you can get access to all sorts of free software, including Access 2007. Learn more...
- Magazines: Membership comes with three excellent magazines that are indispensible for keeping up to date with new developments: IEEE Spectrum (Monthly), The Institute (Quarterly) and IEEE Potentials (Bimonthly). Clicking on these links will provide more description on the magazine.
- Résumé: Membership in a professional organization is a definite plus for this.
- IEEE Societies: such as the Computer Society and EMBS, which provide access to leading-edge information in fields such as biomedical engineering. These societies are available only to members (at a small additional cost)
- Networking opportunities: Some IEEE events will be offered to IEEE members. These provide an excellent opportunity to get to know people in the industry.
- E-mail Alias @ieee.org: This exclusive member benefit identifies you as an IEEE member with an @ieee.org email address while forwarding all incoming mail to your real internet account. This makes your hotmail or gmail account much more professional without having to change a thing.
- IEEE Job Site: The IEEE Job Site matches your skill set with online job listings. At IEEE Job Site, you can further subscribe to IEEE Career Alert, a weekly email newsletter from What's New @ IEEE and the editors of IEEE Spectrum, containing career advice plus the job of the week from the IEEE Job Site.
Why join our branch?
Once you are an IEEE Student Member, you have the choice to join the IEEE University of Calgary Student Branch for free. Our Student Branch does not discriminate against any student (you can join, no matter what you are studying).
- Student Branch events: Student Branch members can receive priority and discounts to participate in the events that we organize (we try to make things free for members when possible). In addition, we try to tailor our events to meet your needs.
- Personal Development: When taking a leadership role within the IEEE Student Branch, you have the opportunity to learn new skills, improve your personal profile, gain industry connections, think from a new perspective and develop better management skills. We're always
looking for new leaders to take the Branch into the future.
- Project Support: If you ever had an exciting project in mind and have the capacity to follow through with it, creating it with IEEE can be very advantageous, as branding may help the professionalism of your project, help with receiving funding, and receive help to advertise and recruit team members.
- Joint membership Option: By joining the IEEE student branch, you have the option of joining Zoo (Electrical, Computer and Software Engineering Students Society) for free, which usually has a cost of 10$!
- Community: You would be surprised how many IEEE Student Members that don't know each other here. By becoming part of the student branch, you have more chances to meet each other, develop a stronger network of people with similar interests, and work together as a team.
- Increased awareness of IEEE activities: In an organization as large as IEEE, there is constant information flowing around, most of it is not pertinent to you. The IEEE Student Branch will try to ensure that the pertinent information and opportunities makes its way to you to help you succeed.

2. Join IEEE (the organization) at the Sign-up page. Use "Calgary Univ of" as the school name.
3. Send your contact information (Name, Membership number, Student ID, e-mail address) and your joint membership option (Options: Zoo), at the Contact Us Page or e-mail us at sb.ucalgary@ieee.org
