Ann Toohey

Biography: Ann Toohey has been recommended for admission by the Department of Community Health Sciences to the PhD specialization in Population and Public Health. She is currently completing her MSc thesis in this same area, supervised by Melanie Rock. Her thesis explores the impact that the presence of dogs in neighbourhoods has upon physical activity behaviours of both dog owners and non-owners. Her project includes a study of associations between both individual- and collective-level attributes of built and social neighbourhood environments and neighbourhood-based walking patterns of older adults. This work draws upon her previous research experience in the City of Calgary's parks planning division. Findings will be particularly relevant for policy-makers and other stakeholders wishing to support the health and quality of life of growing numbers of older adults who will continue to reside in their neighbourhoods as they age.

Ann holds a BA in Chemistry from Reed College in Portland, OR, USA. She freelances in website development and written communications.

Research Interests: Determinants of physical activity for older adults, including both social and built environments; associations between physical activity and cognitive health for aging adults; and health promotion at the animal-human interface.
