Melanie Rock (Director)Research Interests: Human-animal relationships as a window into human health; sociocultural patterns and inequity in complex systems; chronic non-infectious diseases; qualitative methods (including for knowledge synthesis) Publications: See PubMed and Google Scholar Biography: Melanie joined the University of Calgary faculty in 2003, following doctoral studies in medical anthropology (at McGill University) and postdoctoral studies focused on health promotion in the context of social inequalities (at the Université de Montréal). A grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) initiated Melanie's research program on population health and animal-human interfaces. Her research program has also been supported by an Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions Population Health Investigator Award (funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Endowment), as well as by a New Investigator Award in Cultural and Societal Dimensions of Health from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Contributions to Education and Professional Development: Melanie mainly teaches in the Population and Public Health graduate program offered at the University of Calgary by the Department of Community Health Sciences. She also regularly supervises and facilitates student research projects in the Bachelor of Health Sciences - Health & Society Honours Program. Postgraduate trainees working with Melanie are eligible for opportunities through the Population Health Intervention Research Network (PHIRNET), and she chairs PHIRNET's Training and Development Committee. She also sits on a committee for Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions that is tasked with providing advice on funding arrangements to increase human resource capacity for health research.
