Pat Babinec

Biography: Pat originally trained as a pharmacist at the University of Alberta and remains active in the profession as a practitioner and as Assistant Chief Examiner for the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada Part II Qualifying Exam (OSCE). More recently, she completed a BA followed by an MA in Communication Studies at the University of Calgary. Her MA thesis dealt with how people talk about pharmaceutical regimes.

As research assistant to Melanie Rock, Pat began work on human-animal studies focusing on diabetes in July 2006. As of June 2007, Pat assumed an expanded role as Research Associate to Dr. Rock. They are looking at what people do to care for diabetic pets and why and the implications of pet care in the context of sociocultural inequalities. Pat also teaches as a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Communication Studies at the University of Calgary and is a member of the Southern Alberta Primary Care Research Network team (SAPCReN).

Research Interests: Human-animal studies and health knowledge, communication in collaborative care teams, patient centered care, rhetoric, ethnomethodology
