Responding to Students in Distress Training

In this training, you'll:

  • Explore the topic of helping, including the ethics of helping, knowing when someone needs help, and barriers to helping.
  • Gain or strengthen skills in handling crisis situations or general concerns.
  • Develop communication, listening and collaboration skills.
  • Learn how to recognize your limits and set healthy boundaries.
  • Gain knowledge about on- and off-campus services.

This program is open to faculty, staff, and post-doctoral scholars in a helping or supporting role.

About the program

Responding to Students in Distress is based on Alberta Health Services’ Community Helpers Program, which was designed to bridge the informal and formal support for young adults in the community, and to provide awareness of existing supports and services.

This training for UCalgary faculty and staff provides the mechanisms to support existing “natural” helpers in the campus community and will equip you with the skills and tools needed to help students and other community members who are experiencing a problem or are in distress.
