The best time to study abroad is now

Carolyn P. was amazed when her experience in China was so different from what she imagined.

“Being in China allowed me to see the design and ideation of new ideas in a way I could not have in Calgary,” says Carolyn, an engineering student who recently returned from a Group Study Program in Shantou, China.  

She came home full of fresh ideas, new contacts, credits toward her degree, and most important, the realization that the world is immensely diverse and worth discovering.

Visit the Go Global Day fair on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the MacEwan Student Centre, North Courtyard to learn about the multitude of study, research, volunteer, work and travel abroad opportunities available through the University of Calgary.

Whether you attend a session on how to “go abroad and get a job,” check out the opportunities offered by many exhibitors, or connect with a study abroad adviser or past participant, it will surely be time well spent.

Program costs vary, but funding is available

“I know a lot of students are hesitant to apply for an exchange due to funding. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that as soon as I had applied, many funding opportunities became available.” says Julia Domaradzki, a political science student who did an exchange program in Tours, a semester in Seville, and an internship with The Washington Centre.

“For many students, studying abroad is the highlight of their university degree. The friends they make and the personal, academic and professional skills they gain are life-changing. And with so many different types of programs and all of the funding available, there really is something for everyone,” says Colleen Packer, director, International Learning Programs.

Every year more than 1,200 students internationalize their degrees through exchanges, group study programs, research or internships. They can choose to spend a semester, summer or year abroad on one of more than 150 programs worldwide while earning credit toward their major, minor or options. Study abroad opportunities are available in all academic disciplines and allow students to access courses sometimes not offered at the University of Calgary.
