coroner/medical examiner system

"The coroner system came about in medieval England in the 12th or 13 century. Deaths began to be investigated to see if the death occurred on crown property - as taxes then would need to be paid to the crown" (Butt,1995, personal communication).

"Britain - England and Wales have a Coroners System, in Scotland, it is called 'Proctutor Fiscal'" (Butt, 1995, personal communication).

coroner/medical examiner system

Medical Examiner Systems in the United States are gradually replacing the Coroner Systems. Coroner/sheriffs are still locally elected.

"Historical developments of medicolegal investigation in the United States can be traced to the English coroner system" (Schramm, 1991, p. 670).

"Coroners continue to preside predominately in rural areas in the United States and serve exclusively in Alaska, Idaho, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota" (Goldsmith, 1986, cited in Schramm, 1991, p.673).
